People in Indonesia used to be able to buy lottery tickets in their local stores but the government banned them because of religious reasons. Today people who want to play the lottery can only do it online. There are many sites where you can try your luck at winning big jackpots. You can play USA Mega Millions, European Euromillions and even the Spanish Christmas lottery El Gordo de Navidad.

The shio lottery is a popular topic in day-to-day conversations in rural Flores. Men and women, young and old, talk about their successes – usually small ones. Many people also brag about their skills in predicting the next draw based on calculations, interpretations and their ‘third eye’. Dreams and omens that are witnessed are also seen as potential predictors of the lottery results. These interpretations are not new, but the shio lottery provides a foreign, relatively novel lens for talking about these daily experiences.

Rare’s Fish Forever project is designed to revitalize coastal fisheries and empower local people to manage their own marine resources. The EUR1 million grant from the Dutch Postcode Lottery will support Rare’s work in Indonesia to empower coastal fishers with legal rights and elevate women’s roles as leaders of their community-based marine management initiatives. This is in addition to the EUR3 million that has already been donated this year by participants of the Dutch Postcode Lottery to organizations that support people and nature.
