Gambling in Indonesia
As one of the world’s more unusual nations, Indonesia stretches across two continents and is comprised of many islands. It enjoys healthy economic ties with Asia and Western countries, yet gambling remains off limits within its borders. The country’s stance is driven by the fact that it adheres to strict Islamic Law, which prohibits all forms of gambling. This includes online gaming sites. Despite these laws, illegal underground gambling arcades and sports betting rings can be found throughout the nation. The government is looking to pool their resources in an attempt to stop these activities, which could lead to fines and/or jail time for Indonesian citizens who engage in them.
Despite these laws, there are a few ways that Indonesians can gamble for real money online. First, they can utilize a VPN service to make their connection appear to be coming from a different location. Alternatively, they can use a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin to fund their account at an online casino or sportsbook. This method makes it impossible for the authorities to track or stop them.
Regardless of the fact that gambling is technically illegal in the country, the reality is that it is very difficult for the government to shut down all of the international websites that offer these services. The government’s blanket approach has resulted in a number of gaps and loopholes that have allowed these sites to remain open. Until the government decides to close these holes, it appears that Indonesia will continue to be among the most difficult places in the world to gamble for real money.
